My role

Lead Product Designer exploring how we could use machine learning and personalisation to make accounting easier for small business owners. I collaborated with Product and Engineering to shape early concepts, lead the end-to-end design process and validate designs.

The team

I worked as part of a product trio (myself, Product Manager, Lead Developer) within a cross-functional team of five, including two developers.

Overview

This project introduced Smart Suggestions, a personalised guidance layer that helped users stay on top of their accounting. The experience surfaced high-impact actions like late invoices, unused tax benefits, or uncategorised expenses, and positioned them within easy-access on the homescreen dashboard. We also introduced machine-learning-powered transaction categorisation by suggesting the most likely category, based on a model trained on thousands of transactions in Countingup. While the work was early-stage and evolved rapidly, it laid the foundation for an AI-powered assistant that helped users help themselves to do their accounting.
